Turn a Photo into a 3D Printable Model
Outline
Polar Cloud now makes it possible to generate a 3D printable model from a single photo. Simply upload an image and Polar Cloud will automatically create a 3D model that you can slice and print.
This feature makes it easy to turn everyday images into physical objects without needing advanced CAD skills.
Common uses include:
Creating figurines from photos of pets or people
Turning images into decorative models
Rapid prototyping from reference photos
Creative maker projects
Design and fabrication learning
Video Overview
Watch the quick walkthrough below to see the full process from photo to printed model.
How it Works
Polar Cloud analyzes the image and generates a 3D mesh model based on the subject of the photo. Once the model is created, it can be opened in the Polar Cloud slicer, scaled or positioned, and sent directly to a printer.
Because everything runs in the browser, the workflow works from Chromebooks, tablets, laptops, and desktops without installing additional software.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step One: Upload Photos
Use a clear image with good lighting
Use either just one, OR four photos
Keep the subject centered
Avoid cluttered backgrounds
Make sure the subject is fully visible
Photos of people, pets, statues, toys, and simple objects typically work well.
Step Two: Generate the Model
Make sure you have enough credits
Click the generate button in the bottom right. From there, Polar Cloud will process the photo and generate a printable model.
Processing time may vary depending on the image.
OPTIONAL:
- You can give a description alongside your photos, to help the model
- You can also choose to "Remove the background" from your image if your subject is not clear and is immersed in the scene
Step Three: View or Load to Buildplate
If you're satisfied with the outcome, you can View the object in more detail and our 3D viewer, or you can load it straight to the slicer (build plate).
Step Four: Slice it!
Step Five: Print it!
Tips for Better Results
Use high-resolution photos
Avoid heavy shadows or dark images
Keep the subject clearly separated from the background
Try different angles or photos if needed
AI-generated models tend to work best when the subject is clearly defined.
